that girl

by Kim Camis

her footprints leave dark smears of the past
scowls follow her stride
(as fast paced as it is)
over burning coals
she stumbles
searching for her beginnings
    can't even find her present
drowning in a sea of fears
desires
so great
she penetrates
the film of what might have been
    (oh what could have been)
tears form pools of misery
into which she drowns
swirling in waves of doubt
-her own existence-
tidal waves crash
confuse
mirror her image
staring at that image
hey stranger
what have i become
stars no longer twinkle in those eyes
sun no longer lights that firey heart
moonlight no longer casts the glow in that skin
silence embraces
clutched tightly
talons of despair lightly tap her soul
    (i'm waiting)
the last of the waves lick
her parched skin
tattered insides
the water is so nice
so nice
she sinks into forbidden comfort
high on pleasure
she sinks further
embers burn her throat
sealing it in a last goodnight
kiss
a lasting breeze escapes
a last goodbye
    a blind eye is turned
as the heavens close their doors for the night
    and the clouds spin on
as those devils wink with secret knowledge
    and her footprints are buried
    maybe in time
    maybe in thought
    maybe in purposeful accuracy
maybe in spur of the moment precision
    but in a definite finality
    that was her own
